Fellows spend two years working at one of our partner startups, where they gain the skills, network and experience necessary to launch their own startups.

For the 2016 Fellowship class, we received nearly 1,700 applications from across the country. The process of being selected as a Fellow is very competitive, and involves a written application, video interview, phone interview, and in-person challenges/interviews at one of two National Fellow Selection Days each year.

Contemporary Slavery and Forced Marriage in War: The Politics of Advocacy and Research

Over the last two decades, contemporary slavery and human trafficking have emerged as major sources of popular fascination and political preoccupation. This rapid and unexpected promotion to the front ranks of global conversations regarding exploitation and vulnerability has had far-reaching consequences. It is clear, on the one hand, that ‘the cause’ of combating ‘modern’ or ‘contemporary’ slavery – which has come to be chiefly understood in terms of fighting human trafficking – has experienced a remarkable degree of success in terms of popular awareness, institutional integration, and rhetorical support. However, many of the practical interventions that have followed in the wake of this success have been inadequate in addressing the underlying causes of exploitation and poverty and complicit in a series of questionable political and ideological agendas. This paper seeks to contribute to our understanding of contemporary slavery with three interventions – bringing historical, gendered and labour perspectives to bear on the question of contemporary exploitation of women in war.

“Feeling the beat: Rhythm, movement, and the brain”

ABSTRACT

Moving to musical rhythm is an instinctive, often involuntary activity, but how does the brain produce this behaviour? In this talk I will describe how perception of musical rhythms activates motor brain areas, even when no overt movement is made. I will discuss brain stimulation studies that attempt to tease apart the role of specific motor areas in rhythm perception. I will also consider how large individual differences in rhythmic ability arise, examining how motor and auditory activity relate to important behavioural components of rhythmic ability.

Coffee will be available in the Atrium, 2nd floor, at 1:15 p.m.

We look forward to seeing you at the Colloquium! As a courtesy to the speaker and audience, please set your cellphones to “silent” mode. Thanks!

Visisting Speaker in Chemistry ~ Professor Yi-Tao Long

Event Date: Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Professor Yi-Tao Long
School of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering
East China University of Science and Technology
Shanghai, 200237, P. R. China

will present a talk entitled:

Electrochemical Sensing of Single Nucleotide on Nanopore

Abstract:
Nanopore techniques have proven to be useful tools for single-molecule analysis.  Protein nanopores offer an inexpensive, label-free method for analysing single oligonucleotides.  The sensitivity of the approach is largely determined by the characteristics of the pore-forming protein employed and typically relies on nanopores that have been chemically modified or incorporate molecular motors.1   Over ten years study in our group, we show that a wild-type (WT) aerolysin nanopore can resolve individual short oligonucleotides that are 2 to 10 bases long.2-3  The sensing capabilities are attributed to the geometry of the aerolysin and the electrostatic interactions between the nanopore and the oligonucleotides.  Here, we reported that wild-type aerolysin nanopore exhibits a high current and temporary resolution for single oligonucleotide discrimination3.  Further applications of aerolysin nanopore were achieved to distinguish individual oligonucleotides from mixtures and to monitor the stepwise cleavage of oligonucleotides by exonuclease I.  Our findings reveal that aerolysin is a very promising candidate for the application of nucleic acid analysis at single-molecule level.
