Community Resistance to Gold Mining in El Salvador

Event Date: Tuesday, February 28, 2017

PRESENTED BY
Professor Amanda Grzyb

Part of the third annual FIMS #PublicInterest Lecture Series. Everyone is welcome.

ABSTRACT
Communities in Central America are using new forms of organizing to resist the incursion of mega-extractive projects in their territories and protect valuable water resources. Focusing on resistance to gold mining in El Salvador as an example, this talk asks what Canadians need to know about the role of Canadian extractive industries abroad. We will discuss the perils of trade agreements that favour multinational corporations over local social, economic, and environmental needs; the assassination of Salvadoran environmental leaders; the OceanaGold lawsuit against the country of El Salvador for failing to approve their mining permit; and innovative strategies — such as local mining referenda — now utilized by Salvadoran communities to resist mining.

Civil Seminar

Event Date: Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Abstract:

I will be talking about Stormwater Management (SWM) Green Infrastructures (LIDs). The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) is leading the concepts of using the SWM LIDs for quantity control. Usually, the SWM LIDs are used for capturing the first 25 mm of rainfall but UTRCA is leading the concept of using the SWM LIDs for quantity control. The SWM LIDs are very effective for stormwater runoff quality as compared to conventional SWM approaches and also mimic the natural hydrologic cycle and thus helps in preserving the environment and help in improving the water quality. The use of the SWM LIDs are gaining popularity in the province and are also considered to help in improving the quality of water in the Lake Erie.

Bio:

Dr. Shah has over 20 years of consulting, public and academic sectors experience in the field of water resources and environmental engineering including Floodplain Management, Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modeling, Low Impact Development, Climate Change Resiliency, Stomrwater quality .

Dr. Shah is senior environmental engineer with the UTRCA where he is leading the technical plan review process for municipal development projects and the SWM LIDs. Dr. Shah is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UWO where he is teaching graduate courses. Dr. Shah has several M.Eng and M.Sc students working with him in the field of water resources and environmental engineering over the last few years.

Dr. Shah is also chairman of the professional engineer Ontario London chapter and is also very much involved in volunteering within the community.

Visiting Speaker in Chemistry ~ Prof. Steen Brian Schougaard

Event Date: Tuesday, February 28, 2017

Professor Steen Brian Schougaard
Department of Chemistry
Université du Québec à Montréal
Montréal (Québec)  H3C 3P8 Canada

will present a talk entitled:

Measuring ultra fast lithium insertion/extraction kinetics

Abstract:
Arguably, electric and hybrid electric vehicles are the new frontiers for lithium batteries. As a new market it is distinctly different from mass produced microelectronics, not only in the energy per battery unit but also in the power performance requirements. Especially the required charging rates during deceleration and emergency charging, as well as, the discharge rates during startup from standstill are exciting challenges. Consequently new chemistry and new material morphologies like nanowires, shape controlled nanoparticle and size/shape controlled meso-scale agglomerates are being developed at an impressive rate.

Remarkably the question of what limits performance in lithium-ion batteries; the active material or the transport of electrons and/or ions in the electrolyte filled electrode structure, remains largely unanswered experimentally?

We have in responds developed a series of analytical techniques that allow for the study of the redox reaction kinetics without the use of composite electrodes. These include both in situ and ex situ detection schemes, as well as, several different redox systems appropriate for different positive electrode materials. A major advantage of our approach is that the reaction uniformity throughout the sample provides new kinetic insight, which can help to distinguish between possible reaction mechanisms, thus providing better fundamental understanding of both new and existing redox chemistries.
