THE DISASTER ARTIST

Playing: JAN 19 - 25
(No shows Sunday or Monday)

9:20 pm (ends at 11:24 pm)

Rating:  14A

A behind-the-scenes look at the making of Tommy Wiseau‘s The Room (2003), starring Tommy (James Franco) and his best friend, actor Greg Sestero (Dave Franco). The two met during an acting workshop when Greg was just an aspiring actor.

Tommy takes Greg under his wing, setting him up in Los Angeles in an apartment Tommy rarely uses. While Greg soon finds an agent and a girlfriend (Alison Brie), Tommy isn’t as lucky, so he decides to write, direct and star in his own movie, despite lacking talent in any of those areas.

The Room, made on a production budget of $6 million was notoriously awful. It opened in two Los Angeles theaters in June 2003 and grossed a pitiful $1,200, but in a twist of fate, went on to earn a cult following, earning the dubious honor of being dubbed “the Citizen Kane of bad movies.”

Western Film Note: We play The Room 4 times a year as part of our Friday Midnight Cult Films series. It’s by far the most popular movie in the series, doing an average of 100 people each screening. The next screening is Friday, Jan 26th at Midnight.

Chief Justice Richard Wagner, Supreme Court of Canada

Event Date: Wednesday, January 31, 2018

Richard Wagner was born in Montreal on April 2, 1957. He studied at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal and obtained his Diploma of College Studies (DEC) in 1975. He earned a Bachelor of Social Sciences (B.Soc.Sc.) with a major in Political Science from the University of Ottawa in 1978, graduating cum laude. He received a Licentiate in Laws (LL.L.) from the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law in 1979, also graduating cum laude.

Richard Wagner was called to the Quebec Bar in 1980 and practised law until being appointed to the Quebec Superior Court on September 24, 2004.  He was a partner in the law firm of Lavery, de Billy (formerly Lavery, O’Brien and Lavery, Johnston, Clark, Carrière, Mason & Associés) from 1980 to 2004.  His practice there focused mainly on professional liability of lawyers, accountants, architects and engineers, and on commercial litigation related in particular to real estate law, oppression remedies and class action suits.  He argued cases before all the Quebec courts and quasi-judicial tribunals, as well as before the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada.

A member of the Canadian Bar Association from 1980 until he was appointed to the bench in 2004, he sat on the board of the Association’s Quebec Branch and was president of, among others, the Construction Law Section.

In June 2005, he received the Barreau du Québec’s Award of Merit in recognition of his contribution to the legal profession and, in particular, to the creation of the Centre d’accès à l’information juridique (CAIJ) which has provided access to legal information for members of the profession throughout Quebec since 2002.  He was a member of the CAIJ’s board of directors and its vice-president until being appointed to the Quebec Superior Court.

On September 24, 2004, Richard Wagner was appointed to the Quebec Superior Court for the District of Montréal, where he sat in the Civil Division, the Commercial Division and the Criminal Division.  He was appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal on February 3, 2011.

As a Superior Court judge, he sat on several of the court’s committees, including the judicial practice committee, which oversaw training for newly appointed judges.  He has been a member of the Judicial Conduct Review Committee and the Remuneration Committee of the Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association and has sat on its board of directors since 2011.  He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on October 5, 2012 and appointed Chief Justice of Canada, December 18, 2017.

This public lecture is by Western Law's Distinguished Speaker Series.

All are welcome.

Applied Math Colloquium Talk - Dr. Pauline Barmby

Event Date: Wednesday, January 31, 2018

Title: Data and physics in nearby galaxies

Abstract:
Galaxies are the places where stars are born, live, and die, recycling their newly-produced elements into the
next generation of stars and planets. Many different physical processes are involved in this cycle: understanding their
interplay in the interactions of the constituents of galaxies requires a combination of careful observations and detailed
simulation. Combining observations at many different wavelengths of light constrains models of galaxy formation and
evolution, allowing us to take apart and reconstruct the histories of these "island universes". The observational datasets
we deal with are becoming vast and complex, requiring new approaches to data management and data analysis.
This talk will describe the challenges and some approaches, and highlight new results in the observational study of nearby galaxies
with a particular focus on the Andromeda galaxy, the nearest large spiral.

DSAS Colloquium Talk - Sebastian Ferrando

Event Date: Thursday, February 1, 2018

Title: Trajectorial martingales. Convergence and Integration.

Abstract: Starting with the motivation of the uncertainty present in financial mathematics models,
we introduce  trajectory spaces providing a non-stochastic analogue of a discrete time martingale process. We use the notion of super-replication to define null and full functions and the associated notion of a property holding almost everywhere (a.e.). The latter providing what can be seen as the worst case analogue of sets of measure zero in a stochastic setting. The a.e. notion is used to prove the pointwise convergence, on a full set of the original trajectory space, of the limit of a trajectorial transform sequence. The setting also allows to construct a natural integration operator which we study with some detail.
The latter concept leads to conditional trajectorial integrals and a general notion of trajectorial martingale.
