ARTS&REC: an exhibition at Satellite Gallery

mardi 31 mai 2016

Event Date: Saturday, June 4, 2016

Art has work to do. Come see Western University Sculpture students explore art's role in public space. Is art work, play, recreation, or labour? Or perhaps a combination of all four? Through humour, play, labour, craft, construction and design students explore questions of how art serves a public, and in doing so what roles it might play.

Organized by Prof. Kelly Jazvac, featuring work by students enrolled in VAS 3322A, Sculpture & Installation at Western University

Representing Wilderness: Community, Collaboration and Artist

Event Date: Friday, June 3, 2016

Michael Farnan is a multidisciplinary artist and doctoral candidate at Western University. His research explores Canadian representational history and discourses surrounding colonialism, wilderness, nature and nationhood. Michael’s work employs humour, parody and collaboration as tools for critical inquiry and reflection on how we think about relationships to nature.

Farnan’s thesis exhibition includes two major video installations, drawing and sculptures. The work highlights many of the tensions and struggles found within visual representations of Canada’s iconic landscape, and the local domestic spaces that represent the daily lives of a multiplicity of individual Canadians. Namely through re-enactment of national narratives and a (re)thinking of Nation-to-Nation relationships in Canada between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

The show features a large ink and chalk drawing Group of Seven with Wolf’s Head and Study of Dead Hind; two carved wooden transformation masks, Grey Owl/Pierce Brosnan, and Wolf/Kevin Costner; as well as cast plastic sculptures of Boy Scout figurines fighting in a canoe. Alongside this work is the creation of two major video works featuring lead performances by Lori Blondeau and Adrian Stimson; the work of Cinematographers Clark Ferguson and David Hartman; Sound/Recording artists, Jordan Poniatowski and Joel Alain; and Canoe Dancing by William Brims.

The videos, Dance for the Narrows and Pilgrims of the Wild, are a mix of documentary (both fiction and non-fiction), “experimental art video,” and epic nature film. In both these films, Farnan is working within and alongside the “margins” of the grand traditions of cinematic and nationalized representations of the Canadian landscape. In the hopes of offering another voice, and an alternate way of seeing, the Canadian wilderness.

Representing Wilderness is organized by McIntosh Gallery in collaboration with Western University’s Department of Visual Arts PhD program in Art and Visual Culture. For more information click here

This research was supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

“Band Engineering of Graphene using Metal Mediated Oxidation”

ABSTRACT

In the study of materials for electronic devices, there is a continuous search for new materials with useful properties such as graphene and graphene-based materials. Research on these materials is widespread for many applications such as manipulation of the band structure of graphene to induce a semiconducting band gap.

The focus of this study is a cobalt nanoparticle-graphene system investigated for the manipulation of the graphene electronic structure. The properties of this system were investigated using various X-ray spectroscopy and surface science techniques. At a low concentration of cobalt, the metal is completely oxidized into primarily CoO, and the graphene is not heavily damaged. Oxide groups form on the graphene surface but are found to be proportional to the cobalt concentration at thicknesses below 1 nm.

Using X-ray spectroscopy, an electronic band gap of up to 0.30 eV is observed in graphene 2p states when cobalt nucleates into nanoparticle islands on the graphene surface. The mechanism of band gap opening is interpreted using electronic structure calculations, showing a contribution from both the oxidation of the graphene itself and the presence of CoO that acts to localize electron charge.

These results have implications for graphene electronics and spintronics where magnetic metals can be used to induce a band gap in graphene that is stable at room temperature and under atmospheric exposure.

Coffee will be available in the Atrium, 2nd floor, at 1:15 p.m.

We look forward to seeing you at the Colloquium! As a courtesy to the speaker and audience, please set your cellphones to “silent” mode. Thanks!

Batman v Superman

BATMAN V SUPERMAN

Playing: May 20 - 26 (No shows Sunday / Monday)

7:00 pm (ends at 9:55 pm)
Includes Intermission

Rated 14A

Bruce Wayne's Batman (Ben Affleck) and Clark Kent's Superman (Henry Cavill) are pitted against one another when Batman adopts much of society's idea that Superman is a threat to humanity and the source of Earth's chaos.

Even though Batman had retired his cape and mask, he dusts them off as he fears for the future of the world with such great power left uncontrolled. However, as the two square off in a vengeful war, a new dark danger arises, capable of total destruction.

Knowing that many will be killed if the men are allowed to leave wearing the suicide vests, American drone pilot Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) gets the go-ahead to destroy the safe house, when a small girl enters the kill zone just outside the walls of the house on her daily routine of setting up a stall to sell bread. The debate goes back and forth a chain of politicians and lawyers on whether to hit the safe house or not, as the seconds count down.

Biology Special Seminar - Dr. Owen Rowland

mardi 17 mai 2016

Event Date: Thursday, May 19, 2016

Suberin: The Regulated Deposition of a Protective Biopolymer in Plants

Plants have protective lipid-based barriers that modify the cell walls of tissue layers located at environmental interfaces.  Suberin is a multi-layered polymer consisting of glycerol, phenolics, and a wide variety of fatty acid derivatives.  As a hydrophobic barrier, suberin controls the movement of water, solutes, and gases. It also serves to protect against stresses such as drought, high salt, toxic metals and pathogens. The identification of master regulators of suberin provides the means to generate crops that are more stress resistant via enhancement of their suberized cell walls.

Graduate Peer Support Weekly Drop-In

vendredi 13 mai 2016

Event Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2016

Ever feel like you need some space to unwind? Want the opportunity to talk to other grad students about their experiences and studies?

The SOGS Equity Committee, along with SGPS, Student Experience, and CONNECT for Mental Health have teamed up to provide grad students with a space for a mid-week break. Over the summer, stop by the Wellness Education Center every Wednesday between 10:30am and 12:30pm for coffee, tea, snacks, and company. These drop-in sessions are open to any Western graduate student, and are hosted by trained peer support facilitators to keep everything running smoothly.

Once per month, this drop-in will be dedicated to a specific topic. Our first one on May 4 was a talk on Imposter Syndrome. The schedule for the rest of our themed talks for the summer is as follows:

  • June 1 – Life After Grad School: Ready to Defend, but Not Ready for the Job Hunt
  • July 6 – Living on a Tight Budget: Beyond Ramen
  • August 3 – Unrealistic Expectations of Grad Studies: How Am I Supposed to Do All This?

We hope you’ll stop by over the summer, or consider getting involved with the recently founded Graduate Peer Support (GPS) Committee. Please email the VP Advocacy (external@sogs.ca) for more information about the program, the committee, or to suggest talks you’d like to see in the future.

Rated 14A

London-based military intelligence officer Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) is remotely commanding a top secret drone operation to capture a group of dangerous terrorists when they arrive at a safe house in Nairobi, Kenya. The mission suddenly escalates from a capture to a kill operation, when the cameras spot explosive suicide vests that are being placed on two new recruits.
