Weekly drop-in session
Thursdays, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Arts and Humanities Building, Room 2R09

All welcome!

“The only normal way to begin speaking in a new language is to begin speaking badly” (Greg Thomson). Language is a social skill, and as such, the best way to improve your fluency and knowledge of a new language is by speaking with others! But how? Maybe you are too shy to speak up in class, or maybe you want more practice outside of class and have no one to talk with.

Well, you need to drop in and join us at Western’s French Conversation Group. We will be in room AHB 2R09 every Thursday from 4:00-6:00pm talking and practicing our French in a fun, pressure-free, and easy-going environment. It is a great chance to improve your listening and speaking skills while meeting great people and getting a much deserved coffee break with free snacks. You can drop by to any session and stay for as little or as long as you’d like. Feeling nervous to speak up? Don’t be! Your level or background in the language is not important. We will all be practicing and learning.

Just come on by and get some free snacks and coffee or tea, and let’s talk!

Visiting Speaker in Chemistry ~ Professor Laura B. Sagle

Event Date: Wednesday, November 30, 2016

Professor Laura B. Sagle
Department of Chemistry
University of Cincinnati

will present a talk entitled:

Adventures in Combining Plasmonic Particles and Lipids for Biosensing and Spectrocopy

Abstract:
This presentation will highlight two platforms recently developed in the Sagle group which combine lipids and gold nanoparticles.  The first platform involves interfacing a gold nanodisc array with solid supported lipid bilayers for label-free biosensing of membrane-associated proteins.  This platform is shown to have superior sensitivity due to elongated gold nanodics (exhibiting greater sensitivity than typical nanoparticle arrays) and an ultrathin silica layer above the nanodiscs, enabling the lipid bilayer to reside close to the nanoparticle surface.  The second platform involves sandwiching a liposome between a planar gold surface and a gold nanostar to generate a biocompatible, highly enhancing surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate.  Our initial characterization of these novel substrates investigates substrate stability, temperature inside the liposome component, and SERS activity, mechanism and reproducibility.  The substrates are shown to be stable to laser irradiation and exhibit a temperature increase of only 20 degrees Celsius inside the liposome component.  Surprisingly, the SERS enhancement of dye residing in the liposome component was found to be 4 x 106, much higher than expected considering the dye molecules are at least 4 nm from either gold surface.  Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) calculations reveal that our excitation wavelength, 633 nm, is not exciting the dipole mode, but rather a multipole mode, which leads not only to higher SERS enhancement, but also long range coupling.  Lastly, these substrates show greater reproducibility than the SERS generated from dye residing directly on nanoparticle surfaces, and are expected to allow for the non-perturbative measurement of biological molecules in their native state, freely diffusing in solution.

Doug Billson Art Exhibition: Struggle

Event Date: Monday, Nov 28, 2016

“Experiencing schizophrenia, I am impressed by the fact that we truly experience the world subjectively, and that the real and imagined, both are a construction of the mind” (Billson, 2016).

Local artist Doug Billson draws on his lived experience in his latest art exhibit, Struggle. His juxtaposition of mental pathology with mental wellness is portrayed through images he describes as edgy, contractive, awkward, and distorted. Billson’s art highlights his personal experiences with acute psychosis, wellness, and his reaction to the media’s portrayal of illness. Struggle invites viewers to both feel and understand that wellness is not the absence of disease, but is achieved through connectedness with other people, nature, tasks, and transcendence.
