SPOTLIGHT

Playing: March 8 - 10

7:00 pm (ends at 9:20pm)

Rated 14A

When newly-hired senior editor Marty Baron (Liev Schreiber) at the Boston Globe insists that the members of “Spotlight” — a four-person investigative team led by editor Walter Robinson (Michael Keaton) — do an investigation into the child abuse perpetrated by Catholic Church clergy, he’s initially met with resistance.

He doesn’t back down and once the reporters start digging, they’re shocked when they uncover a massive conspiracy to cover up years of child abuse, involving hundreds of children in the Boston area, perpetrated by at least 87 pedophile priests.

Winner of Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Jack (Jacob Tremblay), five, was born in captivity. The shed in which he and his Ma (Brie Larson) are confined is all he knows. His Ma was abducted when she was 17 and their only visitor is his father and her kidnapper, Old Nick (Sean Bridgers).

When Jack and his Ma finally escape, he is both awestruck and terrified by the outside world. His Ma, on the other hand, must face the long and difficult process of recovery after being imprisoned for so long.

Based on the novel by Emma Donoghue, who also wrote the screenplay.

3MT Social Science Heat

jeudi 3 mars 2016

Event Date: Friday, March 4, 2016

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a competition for graduate students in which participants present their research and its wider impact in three minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges.  The challenge is to present complex research in an engaging, accessible and compelling way, using only one slide.

The 3MT competition provides graduate students with an opportunity to refine skills that can be transferred after graduation to diverse career paths.  Distilling research into a clear form, without over-simplifying or making it overly-complex, and highlighting the wider implications of the research are important skills to carry into post-graduate employment and public service.

The competition also enables students to showcase their research to a wider audience, across disciplines within the university and to the broader public.  The competition is open to the public, and is advertised within the community.  The 3MT is a unique opportunity to communicate the innovative and significant research undertaken by our graduate students.
