Africa-Western Collaborations Day

Join Western faculty, staff and students in celebrating African connections and collaborations. The event will include a presentation featuring Keynote Speaker Maimuna Kanyamala from Tanzania, founder of Mikono Yeto ("Joining Our Hands"), as well as faculty presentations, student posters, music, entertainment, refreshments and more.

Presentation Description:

After leading the Kivulini Women’s Rights Organization in Mwanza, Tanzania for 12 years, Maimuna Kanyamala will tell her story about establishing Mikono Yetu (“Joining Our Hands”), an organization dedicated to addressing the gender inequality in land ownership and control. Current research taught Maimuna that women and girls who are economically empowered have more options and her own experience showed this to be true. She has captured the imagination of the Tanzanian Government and Development partners to establish a Tanzanian Women’s museum to showcase women’s respected place in history and to celebrate strong women leaders.

Maimuna will be introduced by Dr. Katherine McKenna who will provide a short presentation on women’s loss of economic power in Africa due to colonialism. Dr. McKenna will share a three-minute video by one of her former graduate students, Dr. Kate Grantham, who presents her research on the impact of social enterprise on women’s lives in Mwanza, Tanzania.
