Professor Keng Chou
University of Chemistry
University of British Columbia
will present a talk entitled:
"Oil sands surface chemistry studied by nonlinear optical spectroscopy"
The increasing demand for oil has encouraged investment in oil sands. Canada’s oil sands reserves, which are estimated at 175 billion barrels, place Canada third in the world ranking of crude oil reserves. The resource represents great opportunities for the future energy demand, but the amount of water and energy used in the current bitumen extraction processes is a concern. This presentation will provide an overview on Canadian’s oil sands developments and the challenges to study the chemistry at liquid/mineral interfaces.
