“Vitamin D and musculoskeletal health: a growing body
of evidence from infancy to aging.”

Vitamin D has long been known for its functional role in the prevention of rickets, osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Early research demonstrated that rickets and osteomalacia associate with proximal muscle weakness. Today, most Canadian’s have good vitamin D status. However, a significant proportion of newborn infants, Aboriginal groups and the elderly in long-term care are at an elevated risk for low vitamin D stores. Is it possible that improving vitamin D status could enhance muscle mass, reduce adiposity and improve bone health outcomes? This presentation will highlight recent surveys and trials in infants, children and aging adults that further position vitamin D in the interrelationships among muscle, fat and bone tissue.
