Applied Math Colloquium Talk - Dr. Peter Taylor

Event Date: Friday, September 29, 2017

Title: The High School Math Curriculum: why I think it’s broke and what is my favorite fix.

Abstract: Over the past few years I have been putting increasingly more of my research time into mathematics curriculum development in grades 9-12.  Lately I have even tried to begin doing serious research in mathematics education and I find it a sea change from theoretical biology.
I take mathematics to be (by definition) the abstract study of structure.  Thus the problems (or activities) I construct for my students are structurally rich and everything they do is aimed at exploring and understanding the structure.  This task has both a logical and an aesthetic dimension and as we all know, those two worlds interact in powerful ways.
This Fall I have a number of teachers in different cities working in their classrooms with some of the problems on my website www.math9-12.ca and my objective is to gather feedback from their experience.  I will talk about the ideas that inform my research approach.

“Explaining the Underrepresentation of Women in US Electoral Politics”

Kathleen Dolan
Distinguished Professor
Department of Political Science,
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Friday, September 29, 2017
SSC 9420 at 2:00pm

In 2017, women continue to be dramatically underrepresented in elected office in the United States. While scholars have theories to explain this situation, we know almost nothing about what the public sees as the reasons for the small number of women in office. Drawing on the responses from a survey of 1600 conducted in 2014, I use blame attribution theory to examine public opinion on this important question. In this project, I examine both system-level and individual-level explanations for women's underrepresentation.

One of the leading figures in the study of gender and electoral politics. Kathleen’s work has been published in some of the mostprominent outlets in the discipline including a recent article in the Journal of Politics and When Does Gender Matter? Women Candidates and Gender Stereotypes in American Elections, a 2014 book published with Oxford University Press.

Dr. A Gopnik: When children are better learners than adults

Event Date: Friday, September 29, 2017

Alison Gopnik: When children are better learners than adults are: Theory formation, causal models, and the evolution of learning.

Join us for a lecture by Alison Gopnik, professor of psychology and philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of several books, including the New York Times bestseller, “The Philosophical Baby,” and, most recently, “The Gardener and the Carpenter: What the New Science of Child Development Tells Us About the Relationship Between Parents and Children.” Abstract: In the past 15 years, we have discovered that children are adept at inferring causal relationships. But are there differences in the ways that younger children, older children and adults learn? And do socioeconomic status and culture make a difference? I relate these findings to computational ideas about search and sampling, to evolutionary ideas about human life history, and to neuroscience findings about the negative effects of frontal control on wide exploration. Advance registration requested.

This event will be live streamed.

A Federation within a Federation? Reconciling Indigenous and Westminster Parliamentary Government in Canada's North

Presented by the Department of Political Science

Tuesday, September 26, 2017
SSC 9420 at 10:00 am

Jerald Sabin, PhD

Northern Canada is on the leading edge of political, constitutional, and administrative changes that are fundamentally remaking the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the liberal democratic state. Public territorial and Indigenous governments are using institutions of executive, fiscal, and regulatory federalism to mediate and regularize their intergovernmental relations. This paper argues that two “federations within a federation” are emerging in the Northwest Territories and Yukon – an innovative model that reflects both Canada’s federal traditions and processes of reconciliation.

Dr. Jerald Sabin joined the Department of Political Science as a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow in May 2017. He is working with Dr. Chris Alcantara on reconciling liberal democratic practice with systems of Indigenous government in Northern Canada.
