“Experiencing schizophrenia, I am impressed by the fact that we truly experience the world subjectively, and that the real and imagined, both are a construction of the mind” (Billson, 2016).
Local artist Doug Billson draws on his lived experience in his latest art exhibit, Struggle. His juxtaposition of mental pathology with mental wellness is portrayed through images he describes as edgy, contractive, awkward, and distorted. Billson’s art highlights his personal experiences with acute psychosis, wellness, and his reaction to the media’s portrayal of illness. Struggle invites viewers to both feel and understand that wellness is not the absence of disease, but is achieved through connectedness with other people, nature, tasks, and transcendence.
